So in the evolution of things, we went from open system that we could add/upgrade, to closed systems that could not be upgraded, to now, where we have fewer options and no ability to upgrade.Īpple is going to target users with what fits for most. if Apple were to offer a 128GB RAM MacBook Air, so few would buy it that the cost of running the fab for that would be crazy expensive. Now that RAM and storage are on the same silicon as the CPU, the economies of scale favor minimizing variations and thus options for the consumer. Yes, the moving to SOC brings advantages and disadvantages.
